Harakeke Weaving Ranfurly - Te Rourou o Te Ora - The Basket of Wellness
This beginners course will give you an introduction to the significance of harakeke in te ao Māori. You will explore the tikanga and mātauranga associated with harakeke and gain an understanding of
sustainable harvesting practices, why they matter, and how they ensure harakeke continues to flourish for future generations.
Throughout the workshop there will be sharing of stories, knowledge and traditional uses of Harakeke.
You will be shown how to prepare the Harakeke for weaving, learn foundational weaving techniques and create a simple rourou (kai basket).
At the end of this workshop you will be able to:
1 Describe key tikanga and mātauranga Māori related to harakeke and its cultural significance.
2 Talk about ethical harvesting and preparation of harakeke using correct and respectful practices.
3 Apply foundational weaving techniques to create a simple rourou (kai basket).
