U3A Alexandra - Session 3 Local Stories
Speakers: Robin & James Dicey
From fools and dreamers to hard nosed business -
a gallop through the Central Otago Wine Industry
Robin Dicey – One of the Central Otago wine industry pioneers Robin emigrated to NZ in 1977 to help develop vineyards for Corbans on the East Coast of the North Island. He eventually ended up in Central Otago in 1992 and was instrumental in developing the Central Otago wine industry. Robin started Mt Difficulty Wines in 1998 and continues to maintain an active interest in the industry.
James Dicey – A reformed lawyer and retired Chartered Accountant, James joined Robin's vineyard development, management and consultancy business in 2004. Since retraining in viticulture James has purchased the business and provides viticultural services to a good chunk of the local industry, serving as the President of the Central Otago Winegrowers Association as well as on the board of NZ Winegrowers.
The talk will provide a short history and overview of the NZ Wine Industry and where it currently is. This will provide a context for where Central Otago sits. We will cover the history and development of the Central Otago wine growing region and will discuss its current state. This will include the harsh economic realities of grape growing and why its not all milk and honey. Robin will also lead a short quiz on wine with prizes for the most correct (or funniest) answers!
