Conserving Historic Huts in Antarctica

Speaker: Al Fastier

Al first visited Antarctica in 1987 and has participated in over 30 expeditions to the Ice. He retired last month from his role as Programme Manager for the Antarctic Heritage Trust, a position he held for 18 years. During this time, he was instrumental in project managing the conservation of Ernest Shackleton’s base at Cape Royds, Robert Falcon Scott’s bases at Hut Point and Cape Evans and Sir Edmond Hillary’s hut at Scott Base. Al remains actively involved in working in Antarctica. This summer he participated in hut restoration work on the Antarctic Peninsula for U.K. Antarctic Heritage Trust and was a guide with Heritage Expeditions who undertake ship-based expeditions to Antarctica. 

Al’s presentation will give an overview of his work with the Antarctic Heritage Trust. It will include the challenges and rewards he has experienced while conserving the historic bases and cover a variety of topics including: · Living and working in remote field camps · Building conservation · Artefact conservation · Project constraints · Future challenges There will be an opportunity to find out more during the question-and-answer session.
