U3A Cromwell - A Boy, a Ute and a Tractor
Allan was born in Cromwell and raised in Dunedin. He didn’t like school that much preferring work over education. After gaining a commerce and marketing degree at Lincoln College, he started a one-man landscaping business, in Dunedin, with a tractor. Allan’s wider businesses now employ quite a few hundred staff in a variety of endeavors, primarily in Otago and Southland, including Cromwell.
His main hobby is collecting and restoring vintage tractors, which can at times be a pursuit of economic stupidity.
Allan will talk to you about how he started his business whilst still at school and how it has grown ever since then, sometimes down unexpected pathways. He will reflect on many things have been almost successful and some things not as much…. The importance of giving things a go will be a recurring theme…. As will be, how to overcome obstacles and deal with an endless stream of red tape and public servant asininity and witlessness, that continues to invade him on a daily basis.
Allan will also talk about local Cromwell projects and some of his projections he see’s for the town’s future .
