U3A Alexandra: Session 4 - Heritage in Central Otago

Speaker: Lloyd Esler

Topic: Central Otago and Southland Heritage

Lloyd Esler is an Invercargill teacher with an interest in history and natural history. He has been a columnist with the Southland Times for 25 years and has written a dozen books on Southern New Zealand.

Central Otago and Southland share a Māori heritage. Pioneers, gold miners and explorers trekked through both areas and we shared the rabbit plague from the earliest introduction.

“Later your power came south but the grapes didn’t. You missed out on the sealing and shipwecks, but in early times we both opposed the abolition of the provinces.”
