U3A Alexandra: Session 3 - Heritage in Central Otago

Speaker: Jenny Dixon

Topic: Is heritage protection and promotion at a crossroads?

Emerita Professor Jenny Dixon is Chair of the Central Otago Heritage Trust. Jenny trained as an urban and environmental planner and has had a long career in higher education. She has worked in local government, private consultancy and as a lecturer then professor at the Universities of Waikato, Massey and Auckland. Jenny served nine years as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Auckland.

Born and raised in the South Island, Jenny’s academic career in planning has led to taking on her role in the COHT as a timely and welcome step. Jenny and her husband live in Cromwell.

The session will give an overview of the work of the COHT, its achievements and explore what lies ahead for heritage, with the likely amalgamations of local government and implementation of the new Planning Act 2026.
