U3A Alexandra Series 4 - Session 3

Speaker: Nick Mortimer

Topic: Geology and Landscapes of the Chatham Islands and Chatham Rise

Dr Nick Mortimer is an Emeritus Geologist at the Dunedin office of Earth Sciences New Zealand (formerly GNS Science). He last gave a talk at U3A Alexandra in August 2023 on the Otago Schist. Nick has visited the Chatham Islands four times and participated in a 2003 German research voyage along the Chatham Rise.  The Chatham Islands are New Zealand’s easternmost outpost, located about 1000 km east of Oamaru. They are the only emergent part of the Chatham Rise, a broad, east-west trending submarine feature that is a major feature of the Zealandia continent. Despite the long distances, the geology and scenery of the Chatham Islands have much in common with North Otago. Points of similarity include greywacke, schist, greensands, limestones, lavas – and geologists. Seabed and  sub - seabed studies also help link the two areas.
