U3A Alexandra - Living with Intelligent Technology: From Smart Homes to Artificial Intelligence
Speaker: Andrew Howley
Technology is increasingly becoming part of everyday life, from homes that can automatically control lighting, heating, security, and energy use, to powerful generative artificial intelligence systems capable of writing, creating images, analysing information, and assisting with decision-making.
In this presentation, Andrew Howley will provide a practical introduction to home automation, drawing on his personal experience using Home Assistant to create a smart home. Learn how modern smart homes work, the benefits they can offer, and some of the challenges involved, including the all important WAF. (Wife Acceptance Factor).
The second half explores the rapidly developing world of Generative AI. What is AI? How is it already being used by governments, businesses, and individuals? What opportunities does it present, and what risks should concern us? The session will examine current developments in New Zealand, including increasing government use of AI technologies, alongside ethical, social, and spiritual questions being raised internationally, including recent reflections from Pope Leo XIV and the world council of churches.
Practical demonstrations will show both smart home technology and AI tools in action. No technical background is required.
