ENVIROSCHOOLS

Funded by the Central Otago District Council for the first time in 2009, Enviroschools is a national facilitated programme which involves a commitment from the whole school and school community to Enviro principles.

The Enviroschools Programme fosters in students and school staff a sense of place, connection with, and action in, the environment - both natural and built.  It encourages exploring the history of the land and its people.  These aspects of the programme fit perfectly with celebrating and protecting the uniqueness of the Central Otago region.  It involves children in a lot of 'hands on' experiences and actions where they can make a difference to their own environments.

Central Otago Enviroschools support the local community as follows:

Area Community Priority Contribution from Enviroschools
Water Residential Water Conservation Learning and action at school around water conservation, students taking these messages and behaviours home
Air The smog issue addressed Learning and action at school around transport and heating options, students taking these messages and behaviours home
Waste Waste production reduced A means to implement action 1.4 from the SWMS and supports action 3.1
Landscape & Ecosystems Understand the inherent values of landscape and natural ecosystems Resources that support students to actively learn about habitats, ecosystems, how whenua/the land nourishes life, how people value and change landscapes and how to create and care for Living landscapes.
